We were asked to design renovations to the First Church of Christ Scientists home in Harrisburg, PA. The sign in front of the church states they “teach scriptures for living in the 21st century”, although their building is architecture of the 19th century.
We took this slogan as a basis for a contemporary renovation including a new focal point in the sanctuary, accessible restrooms, back stage offices and a nursery. The design for the proposed sanctuary insertion was informed by the churches founder, her birthplace and her writings. The seven panel glass wall relates to her seven synonyms for god, while the backlit scrim gives the space an uplifting and divine character.
Seven modern pendants are hung to contrast with the clerestory stained glass windows. The vertical faces of the lectern and stage are clad in Concord Granite, another analogy relating to the founder of the church.
