CBST Synagogue

As part of our 3rd year visiting critique studio, we were given a project brief to design a synagogue for a LGBTQ Jewish congregation on the Bowery in New York City. The design concepts were realized after a brief study of the religion, its vernacular architecture and the components that comprise a typical synagogue.

My design had a duality between front and back, the front cascading back to reduce scale at the street and allow sunlight in, while the back cascaded in as it rose, coming to a “divine point”. This was project was as much about learning to manipulate the computer as it was interpreting the design.
